Bread

Reese Saxon

I love bread!  It doesn’t matter if it’s rolls or loaves, toasted or not.  Let me put butter, jam, peanut butter or honey on it.  Let’s make sub sandwiches with lots of toppings! I even like that batter based bread from Schlotsky’s.  In fact, I found a recipe for it and I’ll put it at the bottom of this blog.

As much as I love bread, if this alone was my diet I would soon become malnourished and sickly.  I think this is what Jesus meant in Matthew 4:4 when he was facing his temptations in the desert.  The enemy urged our Lord to make bread from the surrounding rocks, and Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’.”

If bread is all you eat, and you ignore feasting on the rich diet of the scriptures, then you will become spiritually malnourished, too.  Get those Biblical nutrients in ya!

Schlotsky’s Bread

The dough will resemble a batter, almost pourable. Take care not to add too much flour. If using all-purpose flour, use a little less as it is heavier than bread flour. It’s great to eat hot from the oven with butter.

Servings: 12     Yield: 2 medium loaves

Ingredients:

½ cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)

1 tablespoon white sugar

2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast

¼ teaspoon baking soda

1 ½ teaspoons warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)

¾ cup warm milk (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)

½ teaspoon salt

2 ½ cups bread flour

2 tablespoons cornmeal

Directions:

Step 1: In a small bowl stir together the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir to dissolve and set aside.

Step 2:  In a large bowl dissolve baking soda with the 1 1/2 teaspoons warm water. Add the warm milk, salt, and one cup of the flour. Beat with a wire whisk until smooth. Beat in yeast mixture and remaining flour. Batter should be thick, sticky, and smooth.

Step 3:  Prepare 2 pie pans with non-stick spray. Dust pans with cornmeal. Place half of the dough in each pie pan. Batter will spread during rising time. Spray top of dough with non-stick cooking spray. Cover and let rise for one hour.

Step 4:  Repeat spraying of bread with non-stick cooking spray. Bake in a preheated 375 degree F (190 degrees C) for 20 minutes.

Step 5:  Allow to cool for an hour before slicing.

With warm-from-the-oven affection,
